Aetna in China
- Aetna was one of the earliest international insurance players to enter the country after China’s economy reform. As early as 1993, Aetna setup its first representative office in China.
- In 1997, Aetna established Pacific An-Tai Life Insurance Company, a joint-venture with China Pacific Life Insurance Company.
- In 1998, Aetna donated USD 10,000,000 to Shanghai Jiao Tong University to establish its business school, which was named Aetna School of Management.
- From 1992 to 2000, Aetna donated approximately USD 6,000,000 to several leading universities in China, including Beijing University, Zhong Shan University and Guangzhou Finance College, to establish Aetna scholarships.
- In 2000, as part of its worldwide strategic shift to focus on its health insurance business and related group benefits, Aetna divested its life and finance services businesses worldwide. As a result, Aetna Pacific Life Insurance Company was sold to ING. However, Aetna retained its international health business, Aetna Global Benefits.
- In 2003, upon special approval from the China Insurance Regulatory Commission, Aetna offered global health benefits to Beijing Olympic Broadcasting Company.
- In March 2008, Aetna opened its representative office in Shanghai and started to actively explore its strategic development options in China.
